Background

Meaning

sankalpa,devotion and sanctity for nine days and nine nights. There are some devotees keep a pair (two) ghee Nandadeepas and a pair of oil Nandadeepas. Pooja,alankara,naivedya and perform the pathana of:

Sri Venkateshwara Mahatmye mentioned in Bhavishyottara purana. A sort of divine glittering, satisfaction will be found on the faces of the devotees. Actually this is the festival of Gods, all the people observe the Nandadeepas of their kuladevata and kuladevi. Thus the entire atmosphere and the whole panorama will be simply encouraging to indulge in the worship of God, Sri Hari.

In Mantralaya and Bhikshalaya Though we find Nandadeepa always in all the 365 days of the year, during this Navaratri special Deepa Aradhana will be performed at the sanctum of Japadakatti and in the house of Sri Appanacharyaru where Sri Raghavendrateertharu resided for 13 years in Bichali. In Gaanadhaalu at the sanctum of Sri Panchamukhi, where Rayaru was Blessed by the Pratyaksha

Divya Darshana of Tirumale Sri Srinivasadevaru also place the Nandadeepas on the sacred spot during this Navaratri. Bichali Sri Appanacharyaru the greatest devotee of Rayaru – Antaranga bhakta has said in the famous Sri Raghavendra Gurustotra:

We have to place the Nandadeepas before Rayara Brindavana chanting Gurustotra with great devotion. Rayaru will Bless knowledge, power and Tatvagnyana.Will Bless Santana yogya Santana and those who are having Santana their children will get knowledge, putras will acquire gnyana laabha. Their brain will be extraordinary by the Anugraha of Mantralaya Yatiraat. All these things are bestowed by Rayaru by Deepaaradhana. So the Navaratri Nandadeepa is the sanjeevini to protect the devotees. More over This is the last phase of rainy season and the first phase of the winter season. We can say this is the combination of the two seasons Sankramana kaala. The greenery is laughing with smile every where and is filling chaitanya to all of us.

After sending the king Vijayaraghavanayak from Kumbhakonam Rayaru plunged in deep thinking. Aparokshagnyani through the inward eyes experienced the hunger and the thirst of the public. As there were no rains, people were tired of the blazing hot Sun. In the evening at the time of SayamDeeparadhane Rayaru prayed Sri Moola Ramadevaru with great devotion and requested the Lord to save the people of Tanjore from the severe famine. It seems Rayaru's Aradhya adhi Daiva Sri MoolaRamadevaru listened the prayer of Sri Raghavendrateertharu.
 

As per the prerana of Sri Hari Sri Raghavendrateertharu suddenly remembered the incident of Mantra Siddhi during his poorvashrama, owing to the pooja,japa,aahneeka,devotion and dharma paraayana Rayaru gained the anugraha of Sri Hari and acquired MantraSiddhi. Rayaru decided not to use the Mantra Siddhi for his personal benefit under any circumstances. But now Rayaru decided to use Mantra Siddhi to save the kingdom of Tanjore in the interest of the people to save from the people of Tanjore from the grave famine. Lakhs and lakhs of  Tanjore natives will be helped by this Mantra Siddhi. It is a great mahopakaara and Sri Hari also will like this act of kindness as the Tanjore will be free from hunger and thirst, for this Sri Hari will definitely Bless. Thus our Yatiraat was firm in removing the famine through Miracle by the anugraha of Sri Hari. The miracles are quite amazing to us. But for Hari Bhaktas, Gnyanis,swamijis having divine power it is a play thing for them. Because they never utilize for them and never bothered about the miracles. Only on certain important occasions when it is highly evitable for the benefit of the sajjanas the divine chetanas use the miraculous power.

To inculcate the knowledge of Sri Haribhakti, to bow the seeds of faith and belief in God, Vedopanishadas, to increase the unalterable bhakti  among the satvikas to guide on the right path and above all to the betterment of the sajjanas Mantralaya Sri Raghavendrateertharu decided to use the anugraha of Sri Hari the Mantra Siddhi. Secondly the chetana of mantra siddhi should be ready to do any sacrifice, should always be a Naishthika Upaasaka of

Sri Hari. Sri Hari has said in Bhavishyottara Purana:

Those who worship with devotion only with a Tulasi Dala, I will always protect them. It is my promise Sri Hari has said. Our Mantralaya Rayaru Tulasi means very dear. Worshipped Sri MoolaRamadevaru with abundant Tulasi daily. So Rayaru acquired the affection of Sri Hari and thus became successful in proving the miracles to save the people of Tanjore from the great famine. We are highly fortunate that our Rayaru is a great treasure of all these divine qualities. No vrata was left by Rayaru followed and performed all the vratas and gained perfection of divine power and knowledge. The satvika king Vijayaraghavanayak completely surrendered to Rayaru. Bhatavatsala Karunaalu Rayaru came forward to do everything to the people of Tanjore and to protect them. What ever work Rayaru has undertaken performed in the frame work of Sri Hari's anugraha in a most decent and systematic manner. The plan, thought and action of Rayaru are unforgettable and are always remembered in the hearts of the devotees of our manukula. Antaranga bhakta Bichali has completely understood all these akshya qualities and through divine ashukavitva and devotion has said in Sri Raghavendra Gurustotra ON SHRAAVANA BAHULA DWITEEYA WHILE CROSSING THE RIVER Tungabhadra from the sacred JAPADAKATTI of Bichali:

Though Rayaru acquired all the abundant divine miraculous power and is like a moon to the ocean of Sri Madhwa Mata Rayaru has never said anything about himself.Only through Sri Narayanacharya and Bichali Sri Appanacharya we have to come know.
