Background
The divine life of Sri Prahlada Rajaru beyond his childhood , Part -1,is described in Mantralaya (2043).
Meaning
As
we all know, the childhood story of Sri Prahlada Rajaru is one of the
most divine and celebrated episodes in our sacred history. Sri Prahlada
Rajaru was a symbol of unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu.Despite the
fierce opposition from his father, Hiranyakashipu, he never wavered in
his faith. Sri Prahlada Rajaru’s steadfast bhakti became the cause for
a divine intervention. To protect His devotee and uphold dharma, Lord
Vishnu incarnated as Sri Narasimha, the fierce man-lion form. But the
divine journey of Sri Prahlada did not end with his miraculous survival
or the glorious avatara of Sri Narasimha.Beyond his childhood, Sri
Prahlada Rajaru rose to become one of the most dharmic and spiritually
illumined kings in the rich tapestry of Sanatana Dharma, embodying the
ideals of righteous rule and unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu.
After
the fall of Hiranyakashipu, the kingdom of the Daityas stood at a
crossroads. It had long been steeped in adharma and ruled by pride and
ego. The time had come for transformation. Recognizing this, Sri Hari
Himself appointed Sri Prahlada as the rightful king.Upon assuming the
throne, Sri Prahlada Rajaru led with firm resolve and divine
compassion. Though born into a lineage of asuras, he ushered in an era
of spiritual and moral awakening.Through his own life and teachings, he
inspired countless Daityas to become sincere devotees of Lord Hari. His
rule was deeply rooted in the principles of dharma—truth, justice,
compassion, and humility.Under his righteous governance, the kingdom
prospered. Peace prevailed, and the people walked the noble path of
righteousness.
One of the most remarkable episodes from his
reign is the story of his son Virochana, which reveals the depth of
Prahlada Rajaru’s commitment to dharma and his unshakable sense of
justice.
Virochana, like any prince, was sent to a gurukula to
receive formal education. Despite being the son of a noble and saintly
king, the ego of royalty began to cloud Virochana’s judgment. In his
heart grew a sense of superiority not founded on wisdom, but on pride
in his royal lineage.
One day, the guru asked a profound
question to the students in the assembly: "Who among you is truly
superior?" Virochana, filled with pride, immediately stood up and
declared, "I am the most superior, for I am the son of the great king
Prahlada." The guru, though troubled, remained silent, perhaps out of
fear of offending the prince.
Amidst the group of students, one
voice stood out—it was Sumati, the guru’s son, known for his wisdom
beyond his years. Rising calmly, he spoke with quiet conviction, “What
truly makes one great is not lineage or rank, but the realization of
the Supreme—Brahma Gynaana, the sacred understanding of the Lord.”
Virochana,
still immature in his understanding, mistook this for arrogance. “So,
because you are a Brahmin, you claim to have Brahma Gyaana and declare
yourself superior to me?” he retorted. Sumati tried to explain that
Brahma Gyaana is not based on caste or family but is earned through
devotion, study, and surrender to the Lord. But Virochana, blinded by
ego, challenged Sumati to bring the matter before the king. “Let the
king decide,” he said. “And the one who loses shall pay with his life.
The winner will kill the looser”
The case was brought before
King Prahlada Rajaru in the royal court. With devotion in his heart,
Prahlada Rajaru invoked Sri Narasimha before taking his seat on the
throne.A radiant glow seemed to surround him, reflecting his divine
connection.Virochana stood with confidence. He believed his father would
never rule against his own son.But Prahlada Rajaru was not merely a
father. He was a torchbearer of dharma—unwavering, impartial, and guided
by truth.
Hearing both sides patiently, Prahlada turned to the assembly and spoke with clarity and grace:
“Yes,
Sumati is right. Brahma Gyaana is the highest form of knowledge. It is
the realization of Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Brahman, eternal,
all-pervading, and the cause of all existence. True Brahma Gyaana leads
to devotion, detachment, humility, and divine service. It is not
inherited by birth. It is earned through tapas, study of the Vedas, and
surrender to the Lord. Many are born Brahmins but live in ignorance,
while some born in other lineages shine with divine knowledge.
Virochana, you have yet to walk that path.”
The court fell
silent. Virochana was stunned. Prahlada, unwavering, handed a sword to
Sumati. “As per your agreed condition, you are declared the victor. You
may proceed and kill the Virochana.”
Sumati, with folded hands,
bowed before the king. “O King, I have no desire to harm Virochana. My
intention was only to correct him, not to defeat or destroy him. I
wanted him to understand the path you have walked, the path of true
knowledge. Killing someone in the name of superiority is not the way of
Brahma Gyaana.” Prahlada smiled and looked at his son. “See, my son,
this is the sign of true wisdom. Compassion, humility, and the courage
to speak truth without hatred.”
Virochana, now filled with shame
and realization, fell at Sumati’s feet and begged for forgiveness. He
turned to his father and promised to become a better person. The court
rejoiced, for dharma had not only been upheld, it had transformed a
soul.
This incident spread across the kingdom and beyond, a
shining example of Prahlada’s impartiality and unwavering devotion to
truth. Years passed, and Virochana grew to embody the virtues of his
father. Eventually, when the people themselves deemed him ready,
Prahlada Rajaru handed over the kingdom to Virochana, not because he
was his son, but because he had earned it.
Then, Sri Prahlada
Rajaru, relinquishing all royal duties, retired to Harivarsha Khanda to
engage in intense tapas and meditative service to Sri Narasimha. His
life was not just an example of devotion, it was a manual of dharma, a
living scripture for all rulers and seekers.
True greatness is
not determined by birth, power, or position, it is defined by humility,
wisdom, and devotion to the Supreme Lord. Sri Prahlada Rajaru’s life
teaches us that dharma must always be upheld, even when it demands
personal sacrifice. His unwavering justice, even against his own son,
and his deep understanding of Brahma Gyaana, show us that real
leadership lies in selflessness and spiritual clarity. This incident
also reminds us that knowledge without ego, and correction with
compassion, can transform even the most prideful hearts. In every age,
the path of righteousness is preserved not by might, but by those who
walk with bhakti, truth, and fearless commitment to Lord Hari.
In
the next part of the series, we shall delve into the tale of the next
great gem in the lineage of Prahlada, his grandson, the mighty and
benevolent King Bali. His life, too, is a profound blend of devotion,
sacrifice, and divine intervention.
The devotion towards
Sri Raghavendrateertharu is the ultimate truth and is the most simple
and effective way to reach Sri Hari - "NAMBI KETTAVARILLAVO EE
GURUGALA"! “Those who have complete faith in this Guru will never be
disappointed.”
